The 84,000 dams in the United States have an average age of 52 years, of these more than 14,000 are high-hazard dams and, of these 2,000 have been categorized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as deficient high-hazard dams that pose an immediate risk to people and land below the spillways. The Association of State Dam Safety Officials estimates that it will require an investment of $21 billion to repair these aging high-hazard dams.
